The answer lies in the fact that it has nothing to do with political affiliation at all. Hitler, and jointly the Nazis naturally evoke strong perceptions when brought up. Rightfully so, the Nazi's are pretty much considered the single most evil organization that mankind has ever created. It's easier to handwave calling someone a Nazi, even if we think it's in bad taste, than it is to say use a slur that doesn't have so many nasty conotations.
Either way I'd say it's crass to even call people names in any arena, let alone politics where we are supposed to be involving people who make important decisions for millions of people.

I guess it's for similar reasons why Conservatives call anyone who doesn't agree with them...A Communist, Anti-American, Terrorist Lovers...and the list goes on.
