Everyone's actually wrong. The world's fastest guitarist (proven and in records) is Michael Angelo Batio.
Ynwgie (spelling) is a close second...but he also is the top classical guitarist and also one of the fastest sweep and appregiated picking artists I've ever seen.
There, That's all the info you need.
I want to comment on the other artists mentioned:
Santana is far far FAR FAR FAR from the best. Great guitarist and very expressional in his playing but no way the fastest or best....maybe in opinion.
Al Di Meola - I'm surprised anyone has heard of him but yes, he is quite fast and quite good but still, no where near as fast as some of today's players.
Joe Satriani- I live by this guys books for my warmups and he is honestly one of the best today in terms of musical background and theory (unlike alot of today's artists, he has mastered theory).
Van Halen - This made me laugh....Every guitarist knows he's no longer the fastest
Eric Clapton - I don't have to even speak
The guys from dragonforce... Wow....I can't believe someone thinks they are the fastest...No, they aren't and never will be. Fast, yes they were, but their stuff really has no emotion to it and is blan in all aspects.

Most of us guitar players think it is Yngwie Malmstein. (Not sure of the spelling). I've seen and heard Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, Brian May, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. I think Eddie Van Halen is the fastest I've seen, even though he's not my number 1 favorite...

Kid, that's not why people listen to them, to count notes per minute. While positively no one serious cares, you might want to do some counting on the following candidates:
Al DiMeola
John McLaughlin
John Petrucci
Joe Satriani
Vinnie Moore
Eric Johnson
Yngwie Malmsten (people say - he was too boring for me to listen a lot)
Paul Gilbert
and maybe Steve Vai, but he already declared that he is not the fastest, so you decide what to do.

i hate to agree with him. i hate to agree with anyone, but jesse is right as far as pure speed goes, no one touches michael angelo. his band was called 'nitro'(fronted by metal method vocalist jim gillette). He also did some super-crazy ambidextrous stuff. Horrible song writer, and terrible tone, BUT incredible speed. And seriously, Clapton who's nickname is slowhand. that guy should give up answering questions. probably calls himself a teacher too.lol.
