You rightfully have a fear of fighting.

You should have a loathing also.

Fighting is the last resort. You should first attempt to get your point across in a calm but firm voice. Then, if the other person still insists on using violence to resolve the issue, you need to try to walk away and let it be.

Don't walk away because of fear, walk away because that is what enlightened people do. You need to reason with people. You need to emphasize with them,. In a larger sense, you are them.

I realize that, in your culture, backing down is an anathema. That doesn't make it right. In the larger culture in which you live, this type of behavior is not accepted as being correct.

Look at the bigger picture. Be enlightened and tell your friends that they need to become enlightened to the overall cultural tendencies rather than a small subset which espouses behavior that is outside the norm.
