I want to go on holiday soon. I'm considering going to the Deluxe Vasia Beach Hotel & Spa in Crete and I just want to know if my skin colour (I'm about Naomi Campbell's complexion) will pose a problem to the people there. The resort looks amazing but I don't want to go somewhere where I'm stared at and looked down upon. Thanks!

Greeks are racists, not specifically against color and race, mostly against poor nations. So, being an affluent black tourist does not pose a problem, on the contrary, you will be treated like any other important client.
Cretans are actually sui generis and do not easily accept foreigners (the rest of Greeks included), but according to my experience they are very friendly to their visitors. That's why the island is a great tourist destination. Anyway, in a classy hotel, the personnel has the right training to serve and please the customers (well, if the customers are arrogant snobs or rude, I guess the personnel hates them, but they still cannot afford to show it).

Well believe me... Cretans look down upon anyone, even the rest of Greeks.

As they say : "A nationalist is a person that thinks that thinks that his place is better than Crete...."

But seriously, they are very hospitable and professional, although deep down believe that they are much better that the rest of us.

Now, expect that you will be stared at. And if your looks are anything close to Naomi Campbell's expect much more than looks from the males. But you will be treated at the very least in a professional manner. In the very unlikely event that you are not do not hesitate to report whoever insulted you.

We Greeks are a bit racists but our sense of racism does not go along skin colour etc.

We just feel vastly superior to everybody else and we treat then at most with pity....

Crete has about 2 million tourists every year. You will not be the first tourists of african origin, you will be just another tourist. Some men may stare at you only if you are very beautiful.

Greeks enjoy looking at every woman! 13-113 years of age !
You will be treated as any other tourist, no worry.

And there is no need to go to an expensive hotel, you will never enjoy the hospitality of real Greeks : you will be just another guest there.
Mix with locals,dance,eat,drink,sing..... find out what real life in Crete is!

You need not worry about skin color. Greeks are colorblind when it comes to that type of racism. However, if you look anything like Naomi or Halle you ARE going to get stares and then some, to be sure.

If you are a beautiful woman, then I will look at you because enjoying beauty is part of enjoying life.
If you are a beautiful dark woman, then I may look at you more because I don't see beautiful dark women in Crete everyday.-)
No one is going to offend you for being black but yes, you will attract some extra attention.

Like Kimon said Greeks tend to be cultural racists skin colour doesn't really exist in Greece. After all we have been around for thousands of years and never did the slave thing(blacks only) that the rest of the civilised Catholic west world did(British Germans, French, etc) WELCOME and have fun (you will)

Some 15 years ago we had an exchange black student visited my school.
only a few talked to him about to the point when everybody found out he had a gold visa and his father was an ambassador of some country. (he made a lot of friends but a lot of enemies)

my point is that greeks are not used to black skin and especially rich black people.

So you will have stairs-because you will be staying at a nice hotel- out in their streets they will think you are a cleaning lady or something. So if you have the skin, looks and money of Naomi start using her attitude!!!!!

What are you talking about? We are not racists in Greece!
And if you really look like Naomi, don't worry!
Men will be looking at you but this would be normal, wouldn't it?
