Since the word Sonar is an acronym and is more or less an anacronym as well, may be you shouldn't bother!
Or maybe you should consider Radar, because that one's through the air and sonar is through the water, but that's not really accurate either - I suppose what you really need to do is find out what the technical term is for the signal that's returning to your equipment after it's 'PINGED'!
However, even that wouldn't be right as it's all part of the same process - how could you have an opposite to sonar in the first place - unless it's microwave - that goes inward to food doesn't it? but then that's not right either I suppose, you have microwave transmitters don't you?
Maybe that's it - TRANSMITTER - when you transmit a radio wave or anything for that matter, it doesn't come back again like RADAR (which by the way is another acronym that's become a anacronym) or SONAR does it ?
There you are - sorted - I'd say TRANSMITTER is an antonym for the word SONAR!!!
My oh my! I'm such a genius!

I think lunar. Sonar is a measuring instrument that sends out an acoustic pulse in water and measures distances in terms of the time for the echo of the pulse to return (sonar is SOund NAvigation Ranging; asdic is Anti-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee).

SONAR stands for "Sound Navigation And Ranging"
Its basically a transmitter, so the opposite would be the receiver.
SONAR is used under water, while Radar is used in the air, that could be a possible, but thats a long shot.

SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging) — or sonar — is a technique that uses sound propagation under water (primarily) to navigate, communicate or to detect other vessels. Some sea creatures like the dolphin use this technique to detect other creatures and objects.

Hmm.. Well.. Sonar means detecting/locating a sound, so maybe the opposite of that would be losing a sound.

the opposite of sonar might be radar, or may be anti-sonar. I keep thinking of this word doppler radar, but I didn't look it up yet.

There is no real opposite of sound detection under water. I suppose it could be radar, but that's a really bad clue.
