The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville reported that Gore buys “carbon offsets” to compensate for his home’s use of energy from carbon-based fuels. What is a “carbon offset,” exactly? Essentially, it’s a payment someone makes to an environmentally friendly entity to compensate for personally using non-green energy.

So far, so good. So, where does Gore buy his ‘carbon offsets’? According to The Tennessean newspaper’s report, Gore buys his carbon offsets through Generation Investment Management. a company he co-founded and serves as chairman:

As co-founder and chairman of the firm Gore presumably draws an income or will make money as its investments prosper. In other words, he “buys” his “carbon offsets” from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself. To be blunt, Gore doesn’t buy “carbon offsets” through Generation Investment Management - he buys stocks.

Gore's mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh--more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh--guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average household does in a year.

For you UP
The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude

Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

No, this is not the home of some eccentrically wealthy eco-freak trying to shame his fellow citizens into following the pristineness of h

Umm, well, obviously you have no lost love for Mr. Gore. And I am sure he does benefit from his carbon offsets, but, lets just assume, that the investments that his company makes really do make a difference in the future use of electricity or oil or anything else that results in reducing carbon based pollution. Doesn't that mean that he is still doing exactly what he said he does, buying into companies that deal directly in that field; ie, companies that build better pollution technology or are working on alternative clean burning fuels, whatever. Just because he might profit from the successes of those companies doesn't take away from the fact that he, one, started the company that further increases those other companies chances of success, and two, he personally contributes to those companies by purchasing their stocks. Would it be better if he bought the stocks from some other broker? What would be the difference? He still owns the stocks. He still invested the money that would be considered a "carbon offset".

Does his home use too much electricity? I suppose so, but, even as an advocate of using less carbon based fuels, it doesn't require him and his family to reside in a 1500sq ft ranch home. Does it set the best example? No, but then again, I would bet that the sums of money he has personally invested into other companies that work to reduce pollution in one way or another far outweigh anything you or I will ever be able to contribute, probably.

And are you suggesting that global warming is a big lie? And what would you base that on, if that is the case? Regardless of whether or not it is caused by the use of carbon based fuels or simple global changes in weather patterns, its getting warmer and warmer every year where I live and everyone I know talks about it. The glaciers are receding at a very rapid rate. Snows are abating on Mountain tops around the world. Ski resorts in Europe are moving to higher and higher grounds to keep up with the receding snow lines. And average temps are climbing all around us. Even if its just mother nature, its happening and I personally have seen fairly dramatic changes in the last 40 years. And in the big picture, 40 years is less than a drop in the bucket to have seen such dramatic changes.

Anyway, not necessarily taking sides but that is my spin on it.

It is really sad to see this propaganda from a right wing think tank regurgitated in this forum. Al Gore's success at the Academy Awards and the respect he has gained in the global arena has activated the Republican smear machine. This accusation has been debunked by Keith Olbermann on MSNBC but it refuses to die.

Yes, he uses more electricity than you or me, but the house of this former Vice President and his wife has offices and staffers and security needs that we don't have either. His car today is an SUV, but it's also a hybrid. He and Tipper voluntarily pay the higher cost for something called Green Power Switch, which uses more expensive energy from renewable sources like wind and solar power. He purchases offsets for carbon fuel use.

The right wing hypocrisy and spin marches on..

Yeah, you're right!! Because Gore uses a lot of electricity, global warming is a myth!!! It's so simple!

Its a good thing Al Gore doesn't live in a small home or I guess that would make global warming real!! As long as he lives in his mansion, we can f*** the earth up all we want!!

*rolls eyes*

Because George Bush's stupidity has made him look like a "Saint" ever since he lost the 2000 Election. Gore's little hypocrisies- look NOTHING like the waste, the death, & the loss of national pride that Bush has saddled our country with.

Carbon Off-sets are a way of the elite 'not' feeling guilty for their lavish life-styles.

Here is a concept...they should purchase carbon off-sets and reduce their carbon output.
