Abraham Lincoln was wildly unpopular (just like George W Bush) in his time as President, it is true. He was, however, the greatest President the country has known. He was the original compassionate conservative. He was also most likely the smartest President ever. A lot of his statements and actions point to a very high IQ.

I'd go with Jefferson, Jackson, or Cleveland.

Jefferson was a strong opponent of Central Banking, which has wrecked our economy since it was permanently implemented in 1913 by the unconstitutional Federal Reserve Act (The dollar is worth 4 cents in 1913 dollars and the inflation has gone straight to the bankers' pockets and brought about the Big Government nightmare). Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence which appealed to the Right to Revolution because of abuses by the British king that were light by today's standards. Jefferson was the strongest supporter of freedom in our history.

Jackson ended the 2nd Bank of the US and managed the government's finances so well that it was debt free for the only time in our nation's history. During his presidency, Henry Clay's Tariff of Abominations was repealed (a 50% tariff that caused the Civil War when Lincoln brought it back along with the 1st ever federal pork barrel legislation; the Confederate Constitution proves that the South seceded because of economic corruption, not to defend slavery because their primary changes were eliminating the welfare clause and banning both porking and tariffs, while they did next to nothing to protect slavery).

Cleveland was the last Classical Liberal (meaning for freedom, rather than for change, usually in a Socialistic direction, as it does nowadays) to hold the office of President. Cleveland was the last president to be able to make any legitimate claim that he represented the ideals of the Founders. He was also sympathetic toward the Hawaiian Queen who had her throne stolen from her by immigrants from American. Hawaii would never have been annexed under Cleveland as it was under McKinley.

After Cleveland's presidency, the Democratic Party was taken over by a Socialist named William Jennings Bryan and he lost to McKinley twice. Then came the most important election of the 20th Century, Teddy Roosevelt against Judge Alvin Parker, the last Classical Liberal candidate for president, and America made the wrong choice. Ironically, Cleveland had been offered the nomination and declined out of respect for Washington's precedent, a respect both the Roosevelts never had.

I'd go with John F. Kennedy. He was trying his hardest to unite the nation and ensure equality for all. Had he seen his full term, I don't think you would see the class and social divisions that exist today. The Vietnam war probably would have ended sooner as well. He was also a rich man who was in touch with ALL people.

Before his death, Abraham Lincoln was just about as unpopular as Bush is now.

George Washington because he actually stepped down when people wanted him to become a king. He's the one who set the model for democracy.

You mean best; better is a comparative, best is a superlative.

Littlelambd, you do understand that if Washington weren't the first president, it would have just been somebody else right? I mean somebody had to be 1st. That doesn't mean he is the reason the USA exists.
