There are considerable physiological differences and rats are usually much larger than mice. IN general mice will never attack anyone but some large rats will attack babies.

Coumidin (used as a medical blood thinner in humans) will kill a rat. They bleed to death. Mice do not react this way and coumidin does not kill them as easily.
Warfarin was originally developed as a rat poison, but it is no longer used for that purpose as modern poisons are much more potent and toxic (e.g. brodifacoum). However, warfarin and contemporary rodenticides belong to the same class of drugs (coumarins) and both decrease blood coagulation by interfering with vitamin K metabolism.

Rats are VERY inteligent. Like my girls come to there names, play with me, know how to climb out of there cages when it's open, know what food sounds like, knows how to ride on shoulders and in pockets. They love to be with others, prefferably sisters or brothers. They don't smell that bad with proper cage cleaning. (once a week apx)

Mice are smart, but not as smart as rats. They don't learn there names, they just respond to sound. They eat and run around like crazy. You can't really play with them. They are just not a good pet if you want something to cuddle with.

Rats are like dogs that fit in cages. Mice are just like hamsters.

My fav thing in favor of rats = rats are too smart to run in a wheel, they realize there running in a circle. LOL.

Rats are also bigger than mice, but they are more cuddly. So I think that balances out. =) Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, rats are also available in special kinds. Like hairless, dumbo as well as your normal specialty rat. Yes you can order special coat color, ect...
