I dunno what iluvbio is talking about. The West Coast schools tend to prefer the SAT. The ACT is the uncommon one here. Stanford's website mentions the SAT first when talking about standardized tests.

Anyways, that link will show you a list of schools that don't require standardized tests. Most decent schools require one or the other. I know for CA, the Cal States are listed on that list, but there is an * next to them because they only let you skip the SAT if you have a high enough GPA.

Well if you just mean the SAT it should be a lot because there is also the ACT test. But if you mean both probably not a lot because even community colleges want you to take one so they know how to start you off in some classes such as remedials.

most schools in the west as well as the midwest. northwestern (illinois) is an exeption--needs SAT and SAT II. so does univeristy of chicago. but most west coast schools (ie: stanford, pamona, etc) do not. just ACT
