The comp you have now sounds reasonably good for whats going on in the world now. But a computer usually cant keep up with new software that is coming out after about 5 - 8 years you might consider replacing it. But as far as using for everyday tasks such as browsing the internet, listening to music or Microsoft office tasks it will last for much longer I have a sony vaio from 1997, that I have upgraded to xp pro, with a little ram boost of coarse, but its still going strong, im using it for DJing and storing things off my new computers. It works perfect for that, but it would be far to slow to play my games on even if I upgraded it to its maximum potential. So it really depends on what you use it for, and How well you take care of it. :)

The 3 main deciding factors are this:

1) The capabilities of your Operating Systems (which is tied to...#2) Wait for OS stability. Vista has a lot of updates coming real soon.

2) The software system requirements. If there are programs that your computer still runs in 3 more years, then don't buy new yet.

3) Your personal comfort. Don't rush! Technology is mostly on a 90 day cycle. Something else will rear it's ugly head.

How big is your wallet?

Your pc is advanced enough it should be upgradable if ever the need should arise.
Actually unless you do some very advanced work that requires constant upgrades that pc should be usable for at least ten years.

I have an IBM Aptiva I bought new in early 1997 that still works fine. It is a turtle compared to my newer pc but it never crashes when I surf the net. The IBM has a 1.33MHZ processor so you KNOW it is slow. But the old girl just keeps on ticking. It is amazing how rapidly pc's have advanced since 1997.
If you decide to replace your pc in say, two years, just because you want to. You might consider donating it to a worthy cause because it will still be a fast pc even then.

Depends...If you don't feel like replacing hardware as it give out and would rather buy new...
For example, I have an OLD Pentium 4-B 2.4Ghz (Northwood) Processor that's been running fine for over 5 years overclocked to 2.66Ghz...
I had to replace the memory once, the hard drive(s) about 3 times, and the Motherboard once...but it's still running fine as I type this...the only thing that hasn't given out on it is the Powersupply and the CPU.
So which do you think is cheaper? Buying a whole new computer, or just replacing the parts that go bad as they will eventually.

I have a 4 years old (coming to 5 soon) HP Pavillion with 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM and a 128MB Radeon 9700 Pro.

The Radeon has lost it's fan so I used a standing house fan to keep the it cool or my screen will go all yellowish and stuff.

My hard disk is still fine and functioning well. I even disassemble my PC to bits sometime for spring cleaning.

As long as you take good care of your PC, not installing bad programs and stuff and keep it in a good condition, it can last a life time. :)

Care and maintenance will give your the extra miles. Proper start-up and shutting down of PC too. Virus may be another culprit. Usually Breakdown is due to over heating, so if you run your PC in an air condition room it will last longer too.......! And us it often! Why? If do not us it for a long time.... dust will accumulate in your PC over the motherboard. During wet weather, it collect moistures....So when you startup...... it get short circuit. Then that it.......BYGONE?

you decide on extra guidance: how previous is your workstation (processor, volume of RAM, puzzling stress, etc.) which would be your difficulty-- as adversarial to community, your workstation must be loaded up with too plenty stuff working. so a techniques as DSL is going, a style of issues can effect overall performance. If I bear in mind properly, the extra away you're from the CO (the place your DSL line connects to the corporation that delivers the internet get right of entry to), the extra severe your overall performance is. i think of lots of the time, the shrink is approximately 5 miles from the CO. yet another difficulty may be that the DSL filters are not put in properly this motives each and every form of issues. yet another difficulty must be the telephone wiring the place you reside.

Do periodic check ups at www.pcpitstop.com follow their suggestions.

My Sony Vaio Laptop Fx215 is 6 or 7 years in use.
I had to change the hard disk ( now 40Gb)
however, after five years. ..

They have a harddrive health program that can show you what percent bad your drive is.

This can keep you from losing data unexpectedly, say if it gets to 10 or 15%, you better back up.

Keep a good pc long as you want. Modern pc's are fast, & stable.
Why would you want to waste money for anything else?
