Stephen King's - Insomnia - Would make a good scary movie. I imagine the main villians to look like the Gentlemen in (the series) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - ep. Hush. - only shorter. Creepy men.
This would be the BEST movie, IMHO. Except, just like the new shining - they would have to title it Stephen King's Insomnia - because of the Robin Williams movie Insomnia that come out a couple of years ago.

I'm just finishing the Uglies trilogy, by Scott Westerfeld. That's young adult genre.
The Lovely Bones and Lucky, by Alice Sebold. Those are two great ones (a novel and a memoir) - the first narrated by a 14 year old murder victim, the second about the author's rape on the last day of her freshman year of college. Very well written.
There are tons...but we're likely to see movies about those I've mentioned. And maybe I'm wrong - perhaps they're casting right now.
Are you asking more about popular fiction? As an on-line bookseller, I can tell you I see (and have) plenty of titles that won't make it to the big screen (or even direct to DVD).

Also, to date, Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series has not been made into a movie, although there are rumors that it is in the works.

There are too many of them, including prize-winning ones. While the likes of Stephen Kings and Robin Cooks get made into films in no time, a whole lot of literary efforts do not. The ratio will be 30:70.
