I am a bostonian. Cambridge is not part of boston. The question ask where is the best place to live in Boston? The best place to live in boston is Newbury Street. Tons of shops, tons of culture, also the safest area.

If you're moving to Boston to study, won't you want to be around other students. Commonwealth Avenue runs through Allston, and Brighton both students areas.

Lower Comm Ave (about 500 Comm Ave and below is Boston itself and you can find good apartments if you can afford it)

Brookline is a great area to live also (Again, if you can afford it. I will prefer it to Cambridge)

I will only recommend Cambridge if you are going to Harvard or MIT or any other schools in Cambridge itself)

If you really want to know Boston, you are better off staying in the areas I mentioned and not Cambridge.

Cambridge is the absolute best area in greater Boston in which to live as far as culture, interest, and safety go. It's diverse, free-thinking, open, multi-cultural, young, vibrant, exciting, artistic, hip, and just plain wonderful.

If you are big into partying and such, I recommend Allston. It is safe and somewhat affordable, but definitely the place to be, as it seems.
