There is an infinite number of possible answers here. The rule is if you have N unknowns (here N=2) you need AT LEAST N equations.

So if you can come up with another equation that has x and y in it, let's talk business. Otherwise, you can't solve for x or y.

no u cannot solve for y. because u need 2 unknowns and two equations to solve it via simultaneous eqns.perhaps u forgot to include another eqn? anyway if u really want an answer it can only be y= x+8.

8=y-x is the same as 8+x =y
to solve of 'y' you simply get 'y' alone on one side of the equal sign. thus if you take the original problem...

8 = y - x
add 'x' to both sides...
8 (+x) = y - x (+x)
the positive and negative cancel out on the right leaving only the 'y' alone....
8 + x = y... the solution!

and if you want to switch sides of the equal sign that is ok too... so...
8 + x = y
is the same as
y = 8 + x
