I have a desert tortoise and I'm buying a leopard tortoise and I wanna no if I need to build a seperate environment for the new tortoise.

Im not sure how you legally acquired a desert tortoise, but anyway the answer to your question is no... they should not live in the same area.

Madkins, I concur.. The two mentioned tortoises share habitat requirements and food as well but mixing species ( I know it is done ) but it is not a good idea. Parasites and bacterial diseases that one might be resistant to can readily infect the other and the end result could cost the lives of both tortoises.

It is not a good idea to mix species, and if you DO mix species, you should not mix them from different continents.

The problem is mostly one of diseases and parasites. Bugs that one species is used to can easily sicken another species. Zoos and experienced keepers avoid the potential headache.

It is just part of the Keeper's Creed- if you are going to keep a pet, you owe it the best possible care. This makes even more sense when we talk about some of the costlier species.
