My horse andie had to be put down last week after a severe injury. He got his hoof caught in the gate on his paddock and struggled all night. When I came out the next day I found him standing in the field on three legs. He ripped his right fore hoof off, we found his hoof later. We had to put him down. Now the problem is he was my 5 yr olds horse. We haven't told her yet that he is dead, we keep telling her he is in the field when we go to the ranch. How can we tell her what happened?

I am so sorry to hear about your daughters horse.
I would be inclined to tell her that he hurt himself very badly, and though the vet tried to save him, poor Andie passed away. If she asks how he hurt himself, go easy on the details. Depending on your belief system, it can help to fill her imagination with ideas that he is somewhere else, happily grazing with friends in a field.

I had to deal with telling lots of young clients, at a riding school, that their favorite pony had been sent to the knacker man by the owner of the school. I had to be gentle, but told them that he had died. There were lots of tears, and most of the children arrived the following week with hand picked flowers. We had a little memorial for him, and chose a place in the field to be his 'special' place. It really helped all the children deal with their loss.
(I still get teary eyed when I think of all the hearts that pony touched)...

I say leave a note and walk away quietly or just tell, don't keep this up, it'll hurt you the most.
