Facing the challenges of an independent republic in the mid-1960's,our new government looked to the Gardens for aesthetic and scientific support. The Gardens was then held responsible in creating a pleasing environment suitable to Southeast Asia's emerging business and financial centre in the tropics-simply put,a garden city.

The first Tree Planting campaign was launched by our then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, in 1963. The campaign emphasised providing shade and greenery. It was followed by the "Garden City" campaign in 1967. In the November of 1972, the efforts to beautify Singapore culminated in the first "Tree Planting Day", now an annual event. From being responsible for the entire region, the Gardens' responsibility was cut down to only Singapore.

The tree-planting scheme required thousands of plants and these were grown by the Singapore Botanical Gardens' staff. in the early 1970s, a nursery was set up at Ulu Pandan as an extension to the then Gardens' orchid nursery. A plant sales centre was also set up at Dunearn Road's Floral Mile to set up a supply of plant materials for both public and private use.

The School of Ornamental Horticulture was established in 1972 to meet the growing demand for technical expertise in horticulture. It also became common practice for the Gardens to employ officers from other government departments and overseas institutions,as well as university students on various educational and training schemes. The School also became the first in Singapore to offer a Diploma course in theoretical and practical training in horticulture

In 1973, the Singapore Botanical Gardens merged with the Parks and Trees Branch of the Public Works Department to form the Parks and Recreation Division. The person who was in charge was now called "Deputy Commissioner of the Parks and Recreation Division."

To increase attraction at the Gardens, a second lake, the Orchid Enclosure(now called National Orchid Garden)and the Sundial Garden was added to it. !!:-)
