About how many soldiers made up the garrison of an average English or French castle during the period from 1300-1500? Also, what kind of soldiers made up the garrison (knights, archers, foot soldiers, etc...)

the castles were designed to be held by as little men as possible. around 30 men i believe(during the crusades era). I was shocked to learn this as well. there would be a mix of people who were garrisoned there.

The typical English Garrison, was roughly 800 men. This was usually composed of 1 knight, 50-100 archers, 400-500 armored foot soldiers, 25-50 catapult men and 50-100 long lance bearers.

The typical French garrison consisted of 1 knight, 50 archers, 50 foot soliders, 300-400 gourmet chefs and 100-200 English girls. That caused the English to say, "The French cannot be trusted!"

You are being to vague. The size of the garrison reflected upon the time and where the fighting may occur
Some would be manned to the max others not
