There is nobody who can answer that question but YOU. Our family fosters rescue dogs from the animal shelter. You wouldn't believe how many of these dogs were not strays, but simply good, healthy dogs who simply, through no fault of their own, didnt meet their families expectations. Example: The dog got too big for the house. We ended up not having enough time to train the dog. The dog did or did not __________(fill in the blank) I urge,no beg you, before you get a pet, really think what you want in a pet and do NOT want. If you do not want a pet that will take a lot of time, effort, patience, and consistency to potty train, I WOULD not get a dog. With a cat,if you show them where the litter box is, or perhaps pick them up and put them in it when you catch them in the act of pottying, it will not take them long to get house broke. No offense intended, but I think your Mom would be irritated with ANY dog you got. All dogs do the behavior you described in your ? that your mom "hates" occasionally, no matter how well trained. Also, shedding is a natural phenomenon. You cant teach a dog not to shed. Also, keep in mind with training, that it does not matter how many classes you go to or how often you attend class, it is NOT going to work unless you practice (A LOT) with the dog at home. My dog has taken a private training course and a Basic Obedience course and we graduated simply because we worked EVERY day MULTIPLE times a day. And he is still not fully trained. Please think about these things. GOOD LUCK

If you want a cheap pet that will last a few years, buy two rats. I love my girls. The intial cost is high, for the cage, food, bedding, ect.. but after that they are cheap. Some freinds might get weirded out, but they are like puppies that are small and live in a cage. They play, learn there names, tricks, love to be with you, can ride in pockets and on shoulders, and dont smell that bad. You can get rats in a certain coat color, or specific type like dumbo and hairless.
If you want an expensive pet, get a chinchilla. They are great. Once again you have the inital set up cost. Plus a female chinchilla can run around 150 bucks. You also need to check your state laws since they are illegal in some states. They do make good pets though. VERY little smell and they have VERY soft fur. They live long, and get along with cats and dogs.

If you are only wanting a pet to show off to friends..you probably shouldnt get a pet. Pets are a lot of work. You say your mom dosent like dogs that arent potty trained. ANY new pet you get isisnt going to be potty trained unless you get one that has been potty trained by another person. Some pets you cannot potty train..it just depends on the pet you want.

how about a pot belly pig. they are different and I've heard they make good pets.
Most dogs are going to bark, it's in their nature, unless you get a malumute, which can't bark, but then you have a long fur dog that is going to shed, and not the easiest to potty train.
Or you can get a Sphinx cat, they have no fur, so no shedding. You just have to watch out with them as they can get very cold as they have no fur at all.

Yes I also think a rat would be the perfect pet for you.
Rats are smart and sweet, the live in a cage but you can take them in your hand or on your shoulder , they are very easy to handle. They don't bite you and other people will be amazed that you dare to touch such an animal.
They always need enough food and water and a clean cage, so that's not too much work.

I would have never expected rabbits to have so much personality and could be litter box trained.
Our Breed, the Mini Rex, loves to be held and will lay on top of you for a whole movie.
We let him out in the back yard in the morning and he will come in and out as he pleases.
Actually kind of a perfect pet, very quite, loves attention, velvety soft, doesn't eat much, stays small.
Also provides small, dry and odorless fertilizer for the backyard.

most "unique" pets require a lot of knowledge to be successful. read up on some that sound interesting to you and then decided what amount of care you think you will be able to devote to this animal. you should not get one just to show off to friends. be prepared to love and care for your pet everyday, just like your mom has for you your whole life, ya know? good luck, and hope you find what you are looking for.

You aren't ready for a pet.....DON'T get a pet for "Self Image" because none of them live up to that & you will get sick of all of the duties of a pet owner: Feeding, Cleaning, Training, Exercize, Taking it to the vet - Get tedious after a short time!!!
