All you can do is offer her support and information. Contact your local women's shelter and ask to speak to a councelor....the councelor should be able to give you plenty of info to pass on to the abused woman. At least she'll know her rights and what her options are when she hits rock bottom...I pray that isn't too late. All the reasoning in the world won't help her right now. Just let her know what's available and that you are there for her. Much luck!

You must live in a state without the domestic violence law. In many states, when the police are called someone gets arrested no matter what the other person says. You may try to get the violence on film by hiding a camera or something, however, this may cause your family member to get upset with you. Unfortunately, in cases like this, until the person wants to end the abuse, not much can be done. Hopefully they figure it out before something happens to them permanently.

You need to have a family intervention.

Ask her to come over, have as many people there who care, then have her sit in the room as each person tells her "I am worried about you. I am afraid you will be dead soon. You seem to already have battered woman's syndrome, where you defend a man who is torturing you. This is no life for you, it's no life for any babies you might have."

Everyone has to try to break through her denial, without adding to her feeling controlled and abused. Very fine line.

Before she comes (and have it be a surprise that everyone will be there), have information on all the resources in your community: shelters, support groups, counseling, job training, protection orders, etc.

Develop a plan with the relatives - who can put her up for awhile or get her to a safe place? She will need step by step, day by day help.

Also, has the family confronted the asshole? I mean, have the men of the family gone to him and advised him on how they'll have to beat him to pieces if he touches their daughter/sister/cousin/aunt again? That seems quite in order.

If you continues to live in denial, then she will be continually abused. It is totally up to her. Unless she is the primary cause of the abusive relationship, she needs to get out fast. It seems like her mind wonders off to some fantasy land, where an abusive partner will become as beneign as a lamb when she endures.

Keep challenging her, and then tell the police yourself (if you ever witness the scene).

We had a similar situation with my cousin, and there was actually nothing that we could do. She refused our assistance many times, became defensive and angry when we tried to address the situation. She has to get tired of it, and decide that she won't take it anymore, my cousin did, and when she walked away, she never looked back.
