For some reason recently my clutch on my 1996 ford escort 1.9 liter kicks out of first 2 out of 10 times I put it in gear. I have apx 60,000 miles on the clutch. Does anyone know what this might be? When it kicks out of first gear it makes a loud screech (embarrasing). Is this a sign of the clutch needing to be replaced? Do I need a new transmission? Any comments would be great
Thank you for your response in advance

Sounds like the shift linkage. If the linkage gets out of adjustment (which it shouldn't, but I've had crappy dealership mechanics work on my cars before), it may have trouble shifting all the way into gear - especially since first gear has a longer throw (the shifter has to move further.) Sometimes, if you're not quite all the way in gear, the torque of the engine will pop it out again (and make that nasty grinding sound!) I had this problem recently with my '01 Focus - adjusting the linkage cures it.

Otherwise, it could be that the synchromesh has worn out, and it's not actually going into gear all the time. If the gears haven't matched speeds inside the gearbox, it will attempt to stop you from completing the gear change until the gears are up to speed. If you then release the shifter, the teeth on the gears (actually, the dogteeth on the synchro rings) can be touching, but not meshed together - giving you that sound we all love to hate.

The only thing you can do is first always make sure the clutch pedal is all the way down to the floor when shifting, and make sure your car is standing completely still (0 mph) anytime you shift into reverse, or first (they are touchy gears, those two).

Then you can check the clutch cable adjustment and maybe replace it, to make sure that the clutch is fully released when you push the pedal to the floor.

Beyond that, it might be internal...

My bmw 318is does this crap in 3rd gear and I don't think this has anything to do with the clutch, seeing how you can get it to go in gear without further ado, and seeing how all the other gears work well...

What happened in my case is one day I was hotdogging it and I ground 3rd, and ever since then it does it sometimes. What happens is I either chipped a tooth off the gear itself, or somehow the synchroniser went out of alignment for that gear.

In the case of 1st gear issues, I suspect you may have been putting the car into 1st gear while slowing down and/or when the car is still in motion, as that will cause first to get messed up.

Best I can recommend is don't put a car into 1st gear unless it is standing absolutely still at 0mph, use the brake to stop and just keep it out of all gears until completely stopped, then put it in first.

Basically, you take it easy with that car, which is what I'm doing with mine now. Yes, it will still pop out sometimes and it is very annoying, but the easier you take it the longer it will last... Considering the alternative (which is replacing the transmission), I would take it easy so long it keeps on driving, mine's been doing it for well over 50,000 miles now, so as you can see it's not that big of a deal but the choice is up to you.

i own a shop, and the clutch wont kick it out of gear ,there may be something like a synchronize,r in the transmission that's causing it to jump out of gear, and especially if it doesn't do it all the time either, but i doubt that the clutch would do that, good luck,i hope this help,s.

It's the countershaft clutchside bearing walking out, causing the countershaft to lift away from the fork.

or

Your throw-out bearing has popped loose and needs to be adjusted.

--You don't need to replace the tranny, just adjust the contents.
I recommend you take it to a professional (shouldn't be that expensive), messing with your car's transmission is not a walk in the park -considering the possibility to do more harm than good.

you might be in need of clutch/ brake fluid. If that doesn't help you should have your clutch replaced. can get expensive as in most cases you're fly wheel would have to be resurfaced.
