AAjgaon, Pune
A report from AAjgaon:
I arrived in Aajgaon on the morning of March 17, and was met at the school premises by Mr. Prasad Prabhu, who is in charge of the pottery school. I was also introduced to Mr. Deshmukh who is the principal of the D.eD college and Mr. Dhakorkar who is the headmaster of the high school. These three gentlemen were with me for most part of my visit, and answered all my queries regarding the project.

The Lok Kalyan Shiksha Samiti (LKSS) runs the Pottery center within their existing campus, which includes the high school, higher secondary, and D.eD college. As can be seen from the pictures its a well-equipped campus with all modern amenities including a computer room, playground, audio-visual equipment etc.

The pottery classes were currently being discontinued. This was because the school classes were being conducted from 7:30 am to 11:30 am due to the onset of summer. Earlier, the children were called an hour prior to the commencement of regular classes for pottery lessons which was not possible now. The pottery students, who are about 30 in number, have been selected from amongst existing students (Classes 6 to 9).

Prasad had managed to assemble a few students, so that I could actually see a pottery class in progress. I interacted with a few students. I learnt that some of the students traveled as much as 5-8 kms to attend classes. The students (photo 1, photo 2) were being taught how to make decorative items by the other instructors. The students come from very poor families where the main occupation is farming. There are two other instructors in addition to Prasad, Rajan Mondkar and Manveel Bagaitkar, who have been there for a year. They had undergone a 6 months basic training at Khanapur whereas Prasad had undergone a more advanced 11-month course. The students, the majority of whom were girls seemed to be very enthusiastic and eager to learn.

The premises allocated to the pottery center comprises of two sheds, one of which houses the furnace and the other the students. I was then taken to the furnace room, where the artifacts are produced and stored. Prasad elaborately explained the process of making clay artifacts. He showed me some artifacts that had been made by the instructors. The students have not yet acquired the expertise to make complex artifacts.

The furnace has been operational only since January this year. It had to undergo extensive repair. The modifications made to the furnace include increasing the thickness of the walls, flooring, painting and increasing the size of the chimney. In spite of these modifications they are able to use it only for the Biscuiting process and not the Glazing process, which requires a very high and uniform temperature. The productivity has also been affected due to the furnace and the defect rate is fairly high. Prasad informed me that a Pugmill would be ideal for mixing and a Potmill for glazing. He said that if they could obtain these machines then their productivity and quality would improve. LKSS has obtained a new three-phase line for the pottery center and the electricity supply is stable.

According to Prasad, with the current schedule of the classes (1 hour a day for 6 days a week) the students will acquire sufficient expertise within a year. However, he felt that given the chance to coach them on a full time basis, he could achieve the same within 3 months.
