It is a beautiful Kradenza, and I am almost sure it is oak. It cherry wood in color. My dog jumped up and clawed the top of it, kinda deep, but not real bad. It looks terrible. How can I repair this damage and refurbish the old look???. Its probably a piece from the 1960's or 1970's.. It was left to me from my boss that passed away.

Get a box of Crayola crayons. Pick out the closest brown colors.Warm up the wood and crayon with a blow dryer. Not too close or too hot. Draw in the scratch. If it is deep fill it in a little. Let cool, buff to a glossy, even finish with a soft flannel cloth or t-shirt rag. It will be perfect. This works better than the minwax scratch repair crayons sold at Home Depot.

First off it is a Credenza... Second, depending on how deep it is you may need some wood filler that nearly matches the original wood color. If the scratch penetrated the depth of the stain you should be able to see that color. Also, the amount of repair depends upon your desired level of restoration. Do you just want the colors to match or do you want a smooth finish across the top? For the smooth finish you need a filler of sorts, that allows itself to be stained after it sets. If you just want to match the color, try to determine the original stain type used and buy some from a home repair store. Cherry wood is a fairly common color for stains... Work slow and be gentle.

Large furniture stores usually use somebody to do minor furniture repairs and touchups. They usually fill in deep damage with lacquer sticks. The store staff can probably put you in touch with the repairman they use.

Good luck.
