Always figured it comes down to survival techniques taught to us by our parents. Besides the single life makes it easier to save that ego from being bashed by some damn stranger. Another thing is that spending most of our lives by ourselves forces us to become more comfortable with only dealing with our own needs and wants. Were not use to helping and tending to the needs and wants of others which in a lot of ways makes us feel inferior and scared. But no one wants to convae such feelings so we tend to act untouchable and unattainable. Its a matter of survival thou and lets face it, if you felt the sting of love sometimes lossing an arm is easier, or at the least just them.
