A lot of people on YA keep saying that war is good for the economy. Maybe in the Bush and Cheney School of Economics? Ask their grandkids in a few years how blessed this war is! God, I'm ready to rip off some heads!!!

Sad as it is, they are right. Economics at its most basic is about supply and demand. War creates a demand for products like tanks, bullets, flak jackets, etc. Companies make them and sell them, an increase demand caused by a war means they will make more. Increased production might mean either increased employment or higher wages (or both). Either or both mean more consumption as either there are more people with wages to spend or people with a higher disposable income. Higher consumption means more demand for other products (cars, food, clothes) which means these industries make more, hire more, higher wages, etc. So there is a real flow through the economy. This is all in a closed economy, not taking in effects from trading with other countries as it gets more complicated.

This is why back in 2003 you heard people say that Bush wanted to go to war because the US economy was looking weak. War can give an economy a kick in the pants...as long as your doing the fighting somewhere else. When its in your backyard like in Iraq, war is not the best thing for an economy.

Economics has nothing to do with morality of actions, it just shows how our actions can effect an economy.

If you look at stocks and bonds during war-time, things are usually better. It takes a lot of a country's man-hours, labor, and resources to wage a war. Bombs need to be made, bullets, guns, planes, tanks, ships, steel, gas, rubber, plastic, glass, etc. You name it, when a war is going on, sales are up. That's what they mean by economy. It's not a lie that the Bush administration made up.

it's an old chestnut from a time when America was an industrial nation and factory workers were building the implements of war. Now only a few corporations profit, and even fewer jobs are created.
