Some things aren't presently allowed because of society: human cloning, some genetic engineering, etc. Some things are pushed more because of society and their needs: cures for certain diseases (e.g. aids wouldn't have nearly as much of a need without society sleeping around), global warming being a big to-do. Also, I know we wouldn't have gone for landing on the moon if President Kennedy didn't inspire the men to do so. That was definitely some social pressure. Probably the same with Mars. It certainly wouldn't be possible without the support of society. Actually, a lot of the technology and science are influenced by society.
