I can't stand it when co-workers get overtly chatty & socialize with the boss. Is this necessary to get ahead?

It is called a s s kissing, boot licking brown nosing and it goes on everywhere. If you have a decent boss, he will respond by professionally making the point that this type of behavoir isn't going to get anyone any extra points. If you have a d*ck for a boss who likes attention, you are screwed.
Don't give in. Do your job and start documenting everything.

I know how you feel and have been there myself,

It's hard and very frustrating, but personality is a key component of working with others, because as good as you may be, people still need to want to work with you, for you to have the maximum possible response.

The concern I have is when it becomes a clique- and is exclusionary.

Kissing the bosses butt won't ever replace making the boss $. Work hard and don't give in to wasting his or your time. Remember the bottom line...$ And Kudos to you for not standing for it!...by the way...I'm a boss too..

Some people feel it is, but always be urself, never go out of ur way to kiss a** because that's what they're doind 99.9% of the time. Honest work wins out in the end

Hard work will pay off. Believe me, my officemates kept chitchatting with the bosses plus they come from the same country. I feel a bit cheated as they are paid more than me coz of seniority but I work more. Im sure it will pay off. It will show based on your output....Good luck to us!

Sincere work is appreciated if you work like a cow.
Nowadays require people to work smart than work hard. But if you don't have the brains, don't gripe and just continue working.
