The effect of loneliness on my brain was to make me depressed, which made me forgettful, unable to concentrate, sad, unhappy and generally completely miserable. And this is even though I am surrounded by people, because loneliness to me is the feeling that I am alone in the world, that there is absolutely no-one on this big planet who GETS me! So I'm surrounded by my kids, my fiance, a few friends, neighbours etc, but totally alone.

If you were looking for a technical answer, I'm sorry. I feel like loneliness shrinks the brain!

this is a complicated question because loneliness is going to affect each person differently. It all depends on your genetics and you environment.

For one, you may genetically predisposed to depression and a long period of loneliness may spark off a depressive phase.

However, someone may have a easy going temperament and let things roll off their back and don't care that they are lonely.

While some people may be able to look at the positive things in their live whether its a job, or a interest (i.e. listening to music or writing), etc.

However, it seems that the most people become sad when lonely

As for the affect specifically on the brain, we don't really know, the brain is such a mysterious thing that we are learning new things about it everyday. I'm sure there is some information as far as what areas it affect and how this is related to behavior, but only someone specialized in the field will probably know this information.

Actually Loneliness can cause many manifestations. Anything from severe depression to extreme anxiety and more-over psychosis. Especially the inability of communicating in a normal fashion because of the lack of human contact.

I've lived alone for 17 years and I am alone 90% of the time. This oneness keeps me on my toes so I don't slip one wheel off the pavement as it were.
