Job has a much broader meaning than profession. And if you say "the professions," that's generally limited to jobs that require an advanced degree such as doctor, lawyer, architect, etc.

Profession has the connotation that it requires a high level of education, it pays better, and has a higher social status. A "job" can cover just about anything from lawn-mowing to brain surgery. Although, in general, job has a connotation of being shorter-term, not as high in social status, and not generally a labor you love.

Hope that helps!

To me a job means that thing you go to everyday that you may or may not necessarily like but it pays the bills, lol. A profession is what you went to college for, specializing in a particular area, got your degree and hopefully are now doing and getting paid well for it. :)
