When you "lay" a bet, you are betting against that event happening - for example, imagine you are a bookmaker. If you were to lay a coin landing heads up, you are basically betting against it landing heads up. You could lay it with an amount of £10, and if it lands heads up you have to pay out on the bet (at £10 x the odds). However if it lands tails (as you predict) then you get to keep their £10 stake.

Jargon , slang: To take on a bet - like a bookmaker. Also: Lay Off, Layoff - Bets made by one bookmaker with another bookmaker, in an effort to reduce his liability Doesn't sound like something that the ordinary bettor should get involved with.

In Craps, you can lay odds on the pass line or don't pass line. It is a cute phrase they use at the table that the six is "the best lay in Vegas" because it returns the biggest odds.
