I always have wondered why when you ask an opinion or poll people come along and use thumbs downs for peoples answers. What ever is your point or motive. are you really that hateful of a person? USE thumbs down on your own questions if you don't like the answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Thumbs down should only be used when someone gives an answer that is abusive, off topic or obviously so brief that it's just for points. To give a thumbs down because you simply disagree with the answer is in a way saying that you would like to stifle dissenting opinion.

It seems that the thumbs downs are most rampant in the Politics, Religion and Immigration categories. Liberals and Conservatives, Christians and Atheists, and Fence or No Fence bash the heck out of each other using the thumbs down feature in place of an honest, straightforward exchange of ideas.

Thumbs down is still a good feature but is abused badly.

Some people think it is a game and play on peoples emotions and fears. If one allows it to get to them, they have succeeded. I have come to the conclusion that ignoring is the best policy, pretend the thumbs aren't there, which isn't easy if a clone or troll shows up along the way. Simplistically speaking, people will always have and take issue with polls and surveys in general, which is the biggest oxymoron I can honestly think of. I am not sure if hate is a part of it, that's more of an understatement- there's a lot of anger, hostility and jealousy, a need for self defense, validation and ego and at whatever price or cost. If one doesn't like a question in particular, I always feel they should move along and not answer if it bothers them that much- I think there is an overabundance of attitude. If someone doesn't like an answer to what they feel is in their heart, soul and makes them who they are as individuals to begin with, well, that just takes the fun out of answers to begin with. I just don't get it either and I think wasting time or energy to find out, is fruitless.

I don't use the thumbs very often except when I think an answer is really good or really bad. It doesn't make much sense to thumbs down an answer to a question that calls for an opinion. For example, if the question is "who's your favorite singer?", it's kind of a misuse of the thumbs if you thumbs down people who chose someone you don't like. In that instance I would probably thumbs up people who chose Christina Aguilera but I wouldn't thumbs down anyone who chose someone else.

i enjoy the thumbs a lot actually, when an answer is really good you have to give it a thumbs up and if that answer is picked as best the points in the thumbs are added to the 10 points, so it is actually a good thing. I only thumb down really negative or mean answers and put nothing for neutral ones.. :)

Well sometimes an answer is offensive to a person or a group of people, and I think that opinions that are discriminative and negative should be marked as so. Also, I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but why can't I comment on their opinion if it is very rude or degrading?
I find that most often, only negative answers (that are like i said, rude or offensive) get the thumbs down.
The system works fine for me...
But I do think its annoying when a perfectly good answer is given a thumbs down...

The only time I think it's ok to give thumbs down on someone's answer is when there is a definite right or wrong and they are wrong. If the answers are a matter of personal opinion,no-one has the right to do that, except for the asker I guess.

I put thumbs down on some answers, but it isn't out of hate. It's usually if the answer is vulgar or hateful or racist or just offensive is some way. I also miss the thumbs down for the questions.

I will use the thumbs down when a person is being racist, hateful, or willfully cruel. Also, I will thumbs down someone who answers a question with a single letter, and then comes back and fills in later. It might be petty, but that bugs me.

However, I have never given a single thumbs-down just because I disagreed with the answer. I've even given a BA to one or two folks whom I completely disagreed with.
