Is there something deep that is lost when a baby is taken from it's real mother? Do you think the baby knows?

no, but when they get older is when you might run into problems, if you never tell them they will never know, but if you do tell them later they might have some issues.

I was a newborn nursery nurse- I often worked with momn's and babys in an adoption situation. I also gave birth to two children and adopted my daughter when she was 10 weeks old.

A baby bonds with whomever feeds them and holds them.
I don't believe the baby knows. I do know the baby has heard the moms voice and heatbeat during gestation. A baby is very primal at first and love and touch are essential and it doesn't matter who gives that. It is good to have a consistant pirmary person in a baby's life.

and btw a "real" mother isn't necessarly the birth mother. It is the mother that loves and cares and tends to the baby.
My daughter whom I adopted tells me I am her real mother.
The person who gave birth to her is her genetic mother, whom she respects and cares about, but her real family is who raised her. She is a mother herself now and understands the mother/child bond.

I think that a baby knows when it is loved and cared for and understands security, not if it is their birth mother or an adoptive parent that is providing the love and care.

As a baby, I don't think so...I know so many adopted children who thank the Lord that their bio-moms allowed them to have a good family with two loving parents.

I don't believe the baby "knows", newborns memory is next to nothing, but they do say newborns recognize their mothers voice and smell from being in the womb.
