... a faulty fan switch or something? Any diagnostics I can do? It seems that the fan should not be on 24/7. It wasn't that way when I first started using this machine.

Your processor's fan runs to keep the processor cool. If it used to not run constantly, then it's running constantly now because your heatsink is filled with dust. Buy a can of compressed air, and blow all of that dust out of it, along with cleaning the fan on top of the heatsink.

The fan should go every time the computer is on. It is normal.

The transformer (power box) gets hot with a lot of electricity going through it (resistors will heat up too).

The CPU has fans as well to keep the faster processors cool.

The fan may sound louder now than when you got it because of the build up of dust on the fan.

If you have opened computers before, have a look (turn it off and unplug first). Don't poke around with anything metalic ... try wooden squewers or toothpicks to clear out built up dust.

Sound's like your dealing with dust bunnies. Pull the side off and suck it all out with a vacuum or something. Make sure the fan, and the heatsink on the processor are clean. Also make sure you clean out all the holes and cracks in your pc where air get sucked in and the exhaust fan. Pretty much just clean your pc out really well and see if that fixes it.

Hi. Check for dust in the fans which can cause overheating. Case fans will run all the time the PC is on, but dust on the blades will make them sound louder.
