i own a shop, and the main reason we have to replace them,is because the cells get old and wont no longer accept a good charge from a alternator, and when this happens we get the slow starting conditions ,and often they go dead, and wont even hold a charge, but that's the main reason we do have to replace them, good luck i hope this help,s.

The battery is the power source for the vehicle, the alternator is the component that keeps the battery in a state of charge. While running the vehicle with accessories on the battery is being drained of power, there is where tha alternator tries to bring it up to full charge. The constant cycling of the charge in the battery will eventually limit the charge that it will be able to give. Excessive adding on of accessories will make this cycle more dramatic and put a huge demand on the battery causing it to fail earlier, and also the alternator for trying to charge the battery more.

The car battery uses chemicals to create the power for the vehicle. the constant charging and discharging of the battery eventually depletes these chemicals. Nothing lasts forever! The battery is only used for power when the engine is not running so running head lights radio ect... won't affect the battery unless you do it when the engine is off.

The battery doesn't recharge itself as fast as its charge is depleated. (Running A/C, lights, radio, and a lot of city driving can kill a battery.)
Also, overtime, the capacity of charge that the battery is able to hold decreases. Eventually, the battery will no longer be able to hold a charge. So, no matter how hard you try to charge it, the charge wont hold.

Chemicals in the battery break down over a period of time, and also road shock, time, wear, and climate can cause damage to seals and cause leaking of the battery.
