You know, I had the same problem with mine...How did I fix it?
I installed InterVideo XPack ,DVD and MP3. Now it plays any DVD's just fine...cost money though...
But yea, Windows Media Player is supposed to play DVDs...
I even tried installing free Codec packs but it still didn't work until I install the InterVideo XPack.

I also suggest using VLC, but if your determined to use wmp just get a dvd plugin. If you want a free solution get a free mpeg2 decoder from http://www.free-codecs.com I don't suggest installing a codec pack, but if you get something like the klite codec pack and select playback only when insalling it, you should be okay.

Update to MP 10.

Use VLC player.

Try media player classic. Should play with VLC or MPC.
