My ultimate goal is to become a real investor, however, I have no experience in real estate, outside of reading a few books on real estate investing. I was thinking about getting my real estate license and start off as a realtor to get my feet wet, but upon reading some different articles on the net, there's ALOT of competition and it's take about a year to actually get up on your feet. Do real estate agents work on pure commission or do they have a salary? So, what do you suggest I do to get experience without risking being broke for a year?

Take a clerical job in a busy real estate office. Gain experience writing offers, dealing with realtors, clients, and the MLS. Learn your market from the people in the office who are really selling.
Take a prep course for your state's real estate test. If you still like it, take the plunge.

Lesson One: Only a broker can earn a commission. How he decides to share that commission with his agents is entirely up to him.

I have a friend who's been a realtor for 30 years. When she started she picked a good sized subdivision as her "farm". She has been selling those same 'starter' homes in that same neighborhood for thirty years. There is one house she has sold 12 times! It has given her a good living all those years.

Set your goals and go for it.
