You can network the machines even though they are different platforms, however not sure what you're after when you use the term 'server'. XP is not a server operating system even though you can run such things as Apache. Your wintel machine will provide certain services (file and print) so that you can talk to your Mac but beware of sharing directories as this can lead to unauthorized access to the machine if exploited by a malicious user especially if you're on a wireless network.

Yes, you can share a folder on XP and use the Windows File Sharing function on MacOS to access.
