Because its hard to focus and dedicate oneself to self and life improvement when your days are filled with trying to provide the basic necessities of life.
Here are sme examples, some of many:
* Cant apply for a job without a permanent address and a phone.
* If the lights and / or water is disconnected you need to take off from work to fiind and apply for assistance which is a long time consuming process. Also, try getting up and getting ready for work without electricity or water.
* Dont own a washing machine? Its hard to maintain a professional appearance especially if your outfits are few and you need to recycle and re-wear an outfit more than once a week
* Dont have a car? Try getting around town on public transportation. Give yourself an extra 1.5 to 2 hours commute time each way. And plan on bringing your walking shoes with you. Try not to sweat on hot days or slip on the ice in the winter. And be on time.
* No medical insurance. Let your minor health issues build up into major things or if you do need to see someone you take off the whole day in the emergency room instead of a quick appt with a family doctor
* Parent Teacher conference. Thats a whole half day off without transportation.
* Car troubles. I have to call in again because my bald tire blew or my car is overheating. I'll be late today boss.
* Hungry? No food until payday? Forget going out to lunch with the team, I may be seen as unsociable but at least I wont have to admit I simply cant afford to go out. And its hard to put your best foot forward when you are eatiing one meal a day.
* Do you qualify for public assistance despite being employed? That will be re-certification apointment, pickup appointments, appts to get necessary documentation and it all has to happen between 8 and 4pm, prime work hours.
* Faced with eviction or homeless. Can I really concentrate on the work on my desk today knowing my family may be out on the streets tomorrow? I certanly cant tell anybody at work... its embaressing.
* Kids acting out at school because they are teased about their clothes, their hair, their free lunch, or they dont have the jmoney to buy supplies for the science fair? Add another appt to your schedule and request more time off.
* Cant afford good reliable daycare? Thats a whole other story.
Whew! The list goes on and on. Now with lots of determination, support, maybe some government assistance, some lucky breaks, or just incredible talent that makes a boss be more flexible when these things happen until someone works their way out of poverty, things can work out. But your question, is poverty a Hindrance to success. The answer is Absolutely!

I don't believe it is. It can actually be a tremendous motivator. Read the biographies of many of the most successful people in the world and you'll find that the majority of them came from poverty. I think poverty is only a hindrance when it's used as a crutch or an excuse.

Actually, it is as much a motivator as it is a hindrance. Attitude and self-control are most important.
