I'm from South Texas, I've lived on the east coast (Philadelphia area), and now I live in the midwest... Madison, WI.
So speaking for this part of the midwest, what you've heard is true. Except for the cold weather, it's pretty similar to where I grew up - open roads, open spaces, lower cost of living, and they're almost as friendly as Texans out here. :)
I made some great friends when I lived on the east coast, but a lot of people there seemed jaded to me. The population density there makes life more competitive and hurried, and the crime rate is higher. More people drive pickup trucks and SUV's here because there are more farmers, ranchers, and hunters. Also, it snows more and the icy weather often requires a 4 x 4 vehicle.

I grew up on the east coast too in Cape Cod and moved to Colorado Springs in 1980. The people there are more direct and honest and friendly by a long shot. The only problem with Colorado Springs was all the good business their brought alot of people from California and along with them their gangs.
I know that this is everywhere and I am thinking that if I can ever move back to Colorado I would in a heartbeat. Just not to the cities. There are good people there. Or were 10 years ago as I remember it.

I lived in Michigan for 23 years.. it's not as overpopulated as these big east coast cities (I now live in Jacksonville, FL). I don't see a difference in what people drive, except for the rust covered cars up North because of all the salt on the roads in the winter. I rarely see a rusty car here in FL.
I don't think the people are nicer in the Midwest, people aren't nice anywhere. In the Midwest, I think people are even more intolerant, mean and narrow-minded. If you're non-white, non-Christian or non-heterosexual, it's not gonna be fun for you, and that's a shame.

I love Wisconsin!
We are friendly (Unless you love da Bears and your from Illinois)
Ford, Chevy's...Toyota, whatever.
We are not over crowded, uptight, or anything else.
Just normal people, work hard, pay our taxes, etc...
Not different from east coast people.

Yes, it's pretty much true. I'm from Wisconsin, and am currently living in Virginia. I think everyone is also more laid-back too.
