If you're talking about sunless tanning, then hands down it is Neutrogena Micromist spray. The lotions that gradually build tans are nice too, but don't get the color nearly as dark or fast.
The spray works great when you apply it using the same principles as the Mystic Tan booths. Spray it from an even distance at every point where you want color, and spray a lot to ensure coverage. Don't get too close so that it runs off of you, because that will end up in streaks. I've tried TONS of self tanning products, and this one definitely wins.

self tanners, such as jergens & dove.. are okay
but i personally prefer Skin So Soft " Satin Glow Daily Body Moisturizer" by avon. [www.avon.com] Not only does it give a great natural looking tan but it makes your skin extremely soft! It doens't smell as bad as the other ones and wont look like a "fake bake"
** Also try the spray on ones, but i dont think you should if you are not white because those will basically turn you orange,but if you are white you have nothing to worry about ]

I would recommend Fake Bake, it gives you instant color.
It takes patience when applying, you can not do a rush job when using it.
It can be purchased at Sephora or Fakebake.com

use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or so when you're in natural light and when you fake bake, use a tanning lotion with bronzer in it. i really like matahari step 2

That's "tanning".
Stay out of the sun and use that spray that tans without it. (the sun).
