Just this year, our elementry school did away with Music class and now are teaching the kids to speak Spanish. I personally don't like this idea. Not that theres anything wrong with Spanish, but doing away with music class for spanish, I don't think is a good self-motavator for young children.

You guys are giving very good comments, I'm from MS. and where my kids go to school there are only 2 Mexicans and they are learning English. So there's not alot of Spanish speaking people here. I love music and I think that its great for kids to have the opportunity to expand and want to find themselves through music. Learning Spanish, to me, is something I elected to do in 12th grade. Keep posting comments, I want to know what others think.

There is absolutely NO WAY that this should be mandatory. Children should be taught Spanish if they choose to.

Although I will agree that music is a good class, and that it was wrong for the school system to do away with the program, Spanish is becoming very common in the United States and (depending on where you live) many of your neighbors and/or friends probably speak Spanish. I lived in Reno for many years and my school was divided in half because half of us spoke Spanish only and the other half English only. Another thing is that many colleges now a days do not accept students unless the speak a second language or have taken a second language so by showing the younger generations second languages now you will be taking care of a future problem. Finally other countries require young children to take English in elementary schools and then another language during high school so we are far behind (educationally) other countries development.

My kindergarten daughter attends a language immersion public school in MN. Schools that offer a foreign language are opening across the nation. Studies show that the children who are exposed to a second language before the age of 7 do as well or better than children who aren't exposed to a second language in subjects like Math, English, etc by the age of 12. That's why I wanted my daughter to attend the school. The school offers a music class every 10 school days. Not a lot. But singing and music is often incorporated into the days. Think about how many times a day your child is exposed to music and how many opportunities she has to learn a new language. I would embrace the chance for your child to learn something different. And sign her up for piano if you are truly concerned about her lack of exposure to music.

I agree with you. Music has been proven to improve children's learninng and test scores. It's also an outlet for some students who may have a difficult time mastering other areas of education. Persoanlly, I think learning a second language should be left up to the child's and parents' discretion. Besides, if you're going to teach a child a second language, it is most effective to do it before the age of three. My children are half Mexican and don't know Spanish, yet I speak it (and I'm white). Go figure.

well i personally don`t think that its a good idea to give away music class but think on the bright side what if there were new students at a school and there was a lot of children who wanted to be their friends but there was no way to communicate with them. and its always good for them to know 2 different languages so they can communicate with other people. thats all i wanted to say :)

I partially agree with you. I think that children should be introduced to foreign languages at a young age, if for no other reason then it is easier for them to learn. I do however agree with you that the music program should not have been cut. Children need exposure to the arts as much as they need exposure to other languages.

I would say Spanish has more practical purposes than playing an instrument. Plus, it is a lot harder to learn a language when you are older, so it should be a higher priority for younger people. If anything, we should also be teaching Chinese.

lol that is merely to humorous and obviously a funny tale question. Why did not you ask what you fairly had to entice close the answer to to? Why do fundamentalist christians imagine that creationism ought to study in public, authorities funded colleges? the answer is therefore, they imagine that the bible is data and its no longer, its only a e book. they have deluded themselves into believing that an previous e book is extra data than medical data. same to them, in case you believed something as stupid as that i might want to inform you that is sweet to bypass back to elementary college, because of course you neglected the section the position they taught little youngsters a thanks to apply context clues and reasoning skills.

I think a foreign language should be an elective class...not mandatory..and it should not take the place of other curriculum...if I was you, I might lodge a complaint with your board of education...
