Me and my friend are arguing over a word..?
I have a question about the word "BABE"?

Me and my friend just got into an arguement about something.

He said its acceptable for a man to call a man babe.

As in,, on Sopranos, Tony might ask a guy, ?can you get this for me ,babe?
or on full house Jesse would say to Danny, "good job on that gig babe"

I told him its not used for men to say to another man the word "babe".. I said it is used for females. Like if a man asked a woman "Are you feeling ok, babe?. the only acception would be if a female called her significant other babe.

Who is right?

***** I found this on the internet...... I guess this means I lost the arguement???
Danny: Jess, are you just bein' this nice to get out of blowing up more balloons?
Jesse: Absolutely! Ciao, babe!

Tony: Cheer me up, babe!
Silvio: Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in...

so ...i guesi am wrong?

Babe can be used for either. I found this on dictionary.com

1. a baby or child.
2. an innocent or inexperienced person.
3. (usually initial capital letter) Southern U.S. (used, often before the surname, as a familiar name for a boy or man, esp. the youngest of a family.)
4. Slang. a. Sometimes Disparaging and Offensive. a girl or woman, esp. an attractive one.
b. (sometimes initial capital letter) an affectionate or familiar term of address (sometimes offensive when used to strangers, casual acquaintances, subordinates, etc., esp. by a male to a female).

Notice #3 says: used, often before the surname, as a familiar name for a boy or man.

So I think you both won and you both lost.

It can be used for both sexes but it's a generally more common way to address a woman and one that the person is very familiar with. If it's used toward a male, it implies that the relationship is very close. It's not OK to call man or woman babe if the the person is just an acquaintance or stranger. However, if two guys are looking at a girl they can say "Isn't she a babe?" meaning cute/sexy

it's unusual, BUT it is alright for a man to call another man "babe."

hollywood types say it all the time. ("let's do lunch, babe.")

sammy davis jr. used to call veryone babe, as the other poster said.

maybe slightly pretentious, metrosexual, and/or european types say it. it's not something ordinary, beer guzzling, tv watching americans say, but it's not unheard of either.

Not acceptable. I would liken it to having a man call another man any other female pet name. Sweetheart, darling, honey, etc...
It would be considered sarcastic and demeaning, like implying that other man is somewhat feminine. A less harsh way of calling him a pansy or a b***h.

In my opinion woman can say it to anyone. A man should only say it to a girl/woman. It's effeminate for a man to say it to another man.....
