it can overheat at anytime, the fan could go bad, etc. I leave mine on my desk and on for days. the bed is a no-no though. the vents should always be open to airflow. also, if it stays plugged in, don't leave the battery in, high temp and constant ac power are bad for a battery ( http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyourlaptop/f/laptopbattery1.htm?rd=1 )
specs for that processor:
Min Operating Temperature 41 F
Max Operating Temperature 95 F

Laptops of any sort can overheat. Resting it on a table or desk while downloading things overnight is not likely to cause this unless you live somewhere where it is extremely hot. Having the laptop on your lap or on the bed sheets can definitely cause this to happen. You can probably feel the heat it's throwing, which has nowhere to go if you have those vents blocked, and this can damage your computer. I like to have my laptop in my lap, but I put it on a lapdesk, which has a hard flat surface and a padded bottom, which is more comfortable on my legs and allows air to circulate under it. If you can find one of these, they work great. You can also buy laptop cooling pads for your computer to rest on, which are rectangular, hard plastic about 1/2 inch thick with fans built into them. This would not feel as comfortable on your lap, but will help keep the laptop cool if you live somewhere really hot. Targus is one company that makes these, and you can purchase them at places like Futureshop.

Always use your laptop on a clean, hard, flat surface.
I have a thin sturdy flat piece of wood that I use if I can't be on a table top or other clean flat surface.
The vents MUST be kept unblocked so air can flow in and out to keep the electronics cool. You will get some heat out of the discharge air side, but that is normal.
It should not be put on soft materials such as clothing, bed sheets, pillows, etc. that can easily get sucked blocking the vent which would cause overheating and potential damage, or the death of the unit.
Don't believe what you see in commercials with people using laptops on their laps and in all kinds of other situations that defy real-life laptop care of use. They are only using the computer as a prop.
If you want to keep your laptop on all night or all day, it's ok to do so, provided you keep it in a cool well ventilated area on a flat hard surface.

Leaving a laptop running all night will not overheat it. Mine runs 24/7, and has for several years. However, blocking the air vents (such as putting it on a bed) can cause it to overheat. Suggest getting a "lapboard" to place the laptop on (just a small piece of plywood will work fine). They also make fancy ones that have a fan in them that blows up onto the bottom of the laptop to keep it extra cool.

1 No. It won't overhead if you leave it on overnight.
2 Yes, placing the laptop on your bed or under your sheet does heat up your computer. However, it will not destory your computer in just one night.
3 I have a Dell laptop, and I can't tell last I turn it off. The laptop is about 3 years old now, and I never once turned it off. So I don't see why your HP should overheat...
I have Comcast Highspeed Internet, and that is why I never turned off my computer...

sitting it on a bed is bad news. first, there needs to be some air circulating underneath it, that's why they glue the rubber feet on the bottom. secondly, it would make it easy for someone to accidently sit on it.
I drive a truck for a living, have a cingular aircard and have left mine on all night, or even when I'm driving for eight hours to download stuff. I usually close it, and flip it over so the bottom side is up when I do this. Don't know if overheating damages your computer, it will shut down though.

The best way to operate a laptop is to have it sitting on a solid surface. This will leave the room necessary for proper ventilation.
With proper ventilation, you could leave it on for a few days, I know I have...
Most laptops will have a sensor which determines that the laptop is too hot and will shut down on it's own to avoid any damage to the CPU.

Well, I bought a Dell awhile ago and there was a battery explosion warning on my model, but mine wasn't among the recalled ones; however, it can get very hot, especially if there is something under it. It used to get too hot to touch for more than a few seconds, but it was good for warming me up when I was really cold late at night. I think it can damage your computer, but they do have some hardiness...I dropped mine on brick steps, and it was fine, and I downloaded some pretty big files too.

yes they can over heat, usually it takes a lot to do this though. if the processor is being used a lot it could. you can let it sit and download over night, just set it some place open, on a counter or some thing, its not good to leave it on your be though. you can still use it on your bed, just check the heat every once in a while, if you can burn your self on it let it cool a bit.
and will will not catch fire unless you like rap it in a blanket or sme thing and let it sit for hours
