how did you get over your fear and anxiety?

I refused to grow up. I just got older. A lot of people make it sound like you're being tossed out of the nest, and you have to learn to fly. I think it's more like riding a bike, you look back, and your folks are still behind you, but you are pulling away. You could turn around, but you'd rather keep pedaling. You'll crash, and get back up. You'll be fine. Where does it say that the minute you quit high school, you have to quit having fun, and be all stiff all the time? I'm the biggest kid in my neighborhood. I still ride my bikes, play ball in the street, and have a good time, now with my own kids. The difference now is that I have more responsibility, and you learn to manage that, just like you've learned everything else. Best of luck, and go get 'em.

My son had the same fear. He's 23 now and still acts like he's 16....it's not pretty. He's stuck in a sucky job that he still puts up with because it's "easy', he still rides BMX bikes as if he's going to get a sponsor or something, his car looks like a piece of crap because he doesn't have the money to fix it. I've withdrawn all support of his lifestyle because he is capable of so much more than he's putting out...he's just delaying the inevitable. He bitches about how things are, but does nothing to change it.

Being anxious and fearful of growing up is something everyone goes through. But earning your wings and becoming a responsible adult is one of the most freeing things you can experience.

There wasn't any other option! I had to grow up! I was forced into it at a very early age, as I was running our household and looking after my siblings because of my mother's bad health. Someone had to do it, and I was the eldest so it was me! So I learned young to deal with all the myriad stuff that's scary about growing up. Just face it, deal with it, and realise there is no choice in the matter!

You are looking out too far and letting the fear take you. Try to plan for 1 day at at time. Let your long term goal be rather general...like I will go to college or the military or whatever.

Hid in a corner and bit my nails. You will get over it, growing up is a part of life.
