I recommend dell computers to anyone that asks. Each individual will have different results depending on how they take care of their machines. If you take care of them, they will last a long time. Get a good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and use them. It will keep your machine running fast.
Dell also has great coupons. You can find the latest coupons at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html
Good luck

For the money Dell is the best computer distributor currently.
HP has always had its problems and Gateway uses the cheapest possible equipment.
Dell likes to use steady supplying vendors that not only provide low cost parts, but they are reliable ones, you can't get the same from Gateway.
HP makes excellent calculators of all types, they are a good chip manufacturer, but when they tried to grow into other markets they always had problems that made their equipment unreliable.
My brother-in-law is a Computer Engineer who works for a worldwide organization with servers that act worldwide. For the last major corporation upgrade he proposed using Dell as the supplier. His company decided to go for IBM and my brother-in-law has been having problems with his IBM equipment at least once every 30 days since November. He feels that if his corporation had gone with his recommendations, and bought Dell, then they wouldn't have any problems.
Another good hint: Reconditioned or Refurbished computers are often brand new computers that have been returned within the warrantee period and then they have had their parts replaced. This is a good way to get a slightly better computer for a cheaper price. Electronics don't have the same wear and tear as a car does. If you leave a computer, even a notebook, on for a week then you will get any failures that would crop up in 2 years of normal use. If you do this during the warrantee period you can replace a lemon and make sure you have a good machine.

I like and dislike Dells. Compared to other brands, Dell will always be slightly cheaper because most of the time you buy directly from Dell, cutting out the middleman's profits. However, nobody can put down the fact that HP, Toshiba, and Gateway have comparably better Customer service unless your very lucky. Custom builds are fun to work with because you can get exactly what you want but you get no customer service or warranty at all.

There is no best brand. If you want a new computer you are ALWAYS better off with a custom built PC. With a custom built PC you are guaranteed that all of your parts are standard and the computer is built exactly the way you want it to match your budget.
The major brands are notorious for using proprietary parts and software which can create alot of problems when repairing or upgrading. The only benefit to buying a brand name is customer service which you will learn from asking around you will not find one brand that has nothing but compliments.
As a serious computer User that knows what socket my processor is, the difference between the North Bridge and South Bridge Chipsets, what clock speed is, and can fix ALL of my own computer problems; I can not honestly tell you any brand is the best.
Most of the people that answer computer questions here know as much about their computer as they do their car. They know the basics of how to operate it, without really knowing how it works or what to do if they have problems. Would you rather take car advice from someone who looks like they drive a really nice car? or a car mechanic?

My last two computers have been Dell 8200 and Gen 5. They both work great for me. If you are a serious gamer the top end Dell's are good but the graphic cards they use may not be the fastest. For most general users Dell is a quality product with limited problems. I should say they are not the least expensive of the group you mentioned. Any of them should suit your needs so just be sure know what you want and shop around.

I would have to sa that they are probable the most affordable, but definitely not the best. I say this from exprerince. The reason they arent that good is because they dont use all of the best hardware components to make them. There was a lot of problems with my particular pc. Now the worst thing was having to deal with the customer support reps from India. What a pain in the *** that was! Hp computers are the best out of those three you mentioned. My first 2 computers were HP and those held up pretty well. Gateway is one brand you really want to stay away from. (trust me) Good luck with you pc and I hope this helps.

sturdy God, NO! Dells suck. i've got had mine for extremely almost 2 years and that i've got already had to replace the battery, had 14 Trojan Viruses/ Horses, and one anti-spyware virus. this is quite slow and freezes each jiffy. the guaranty is merely for a year, so i'm shocked mine lasted this long. Even my cousin who's a very massive tech individual mentioned that Dells are adverse and instructed me to no longer get one (I had to get Dell by way of fact is the type my college makes use of.) don't get A DELL! I propose A MAC! plenty greater desirable!

It is mostly a matter of opinion. All of them can be equipped so many different ways. "You get what you pay for" is still the rule.
What should determine the computer you buy? My opinion: How much money do you have to spend? What are you going to be doing with the laptop? If you are only going to use it for email and Internet - then something inexpensive will do. If you are a gamer, then you want something with a duo core processor - lots of RAM, etc.
