coughs...one of the hardest maladies to figure out...
coughs can come from post nasal drips (usually a cold) and stopped with an antihistamine (benadryl)
coughs can come from allergies and usually helped by removing the offending allergen (treated with antihistamines (clarinex -- another histamine)
coughs can come from foreign bodies (i discovered a peanut in a little girls' lung, that had been to the ED 6 times for the same thing...
coughs can come from other irritants (cancer is always suspected in adult when all the easy things are ruled out)
does she have any other symptoms? dry hakky cough especially at night when she lays flat....et cetera...
these are the most common things that i could think of off the top of myhead...
good luck

My daughter used to get like that a lot. Even though she loved cheese and ice cream I took her off dairy to see if it helped. I told her just 1 week with zero dairy and if it didn't make any difference she could go back to eating like she normally did. After just a few days the cough was almost gone and by weeks end it had cleared completely. As long as she avoids dairy (only has it once or twice a month) she has no problems, when she starts eating it regularly the cough comes back.

besides suction and a humidifier or sitting contained in the bathroom with a warm bathe going, i visit't propose something else. Make an appointment with you pediatrician once accessible only to be threat-free. My youngest, at 7 months, had the most terrible coughing, wheezing, and runny nostril. obviously it began on a Friday evening! i became searching for a fever or diarrhea all weekend, because with both symptom i could have taken her to the ER...yet they in no way got here. On Monday morning, I took her to the record, and it became no longer pnuemonia, only a cold. yet i became relieved because I knew for particular!

it's possible that her she is more sensitive to viruses in her lung tissue. this has been a very bad season for cold, etc. she probably has had one virus after another. she needs to wash her hands more frequently to stop the spread of germs.
tell your cousin about your concerns and ask them if she has been to a pediatrician. each visit to the ER requires a follow up with a primary care doctor. she may have illness-induced asthma.

I don't know what it is but I think my family has it too. I've had it since Thanksgiving. It isn't miserable, but it won't go away. No other symptoms, just a productive irritating cough. I'll be watching this one. Hope you get a good answer.

I think everyone I know here has that cough...

If you are into natural remedies, you might want to try peppermint tea. [Nice and hot, add sweetener and milk and she should love it.]

If the doctor hasn't prescribed some sort of inhaler, it might be time to try one - the people around here who have used inhalers have had much more success with getting rid of THAT cough...
