Murphy's musical talent is on display in 2006's Dreamgirls, where he plays a character loosely based on James Brown and later Marvin Gaye. He sings (and raps) several numbers in the film. His performance won him his first ever Golden Globe & Screen Actors Guild awards in 2007 for "Best Actor In A Supporting Role". He was nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for his performance in Dreamgirls.
