There's an instinctual fear of snakes built right into to all of us, so don't feel bad about being afraid. ^_^

As for me, I seem to be missing that little instinct, and a lot of snake owners seem to. I think it's just been replaced in all of us with a respect for the power a snake has, rather than fear of that power. Like with me, I think rattlesnakes are just gorgeous, but I also respect that it's gonna bite me good if I get too close.

If you want to get over your fear, take small baby steps- pushing yourself with snakes is just going to make the fear worse.

I'd suggest heading to the local pet store and asking to hold either a corn snake (although they're faster little guys!) or a ball python (these guys are amazingly gentle!). If you need to, tell the employees you're thinking about buying a snake but you're a little hesitant, and they'll fall right over you to help you out. Maybe just pet it while the employee holds it and work your way up to holding it.

But trust me, after the first time holding a good sized python (like a ball python), you'll love 'em. ^_^ There's something really beautiful about them that isn't driven home until you've held one.

depends on why you are afraid and why you no longer want to be afraid.

do you want a pet of your own or is there some one you like that has them so you are trying to adapt?

I keep over 60 snakes none of them are venomous, and have been bitten more times than I can remember. Most of the time it hurts less than a cat scratch or a bee sting. As a carpenter I have hurt myself more with my hammer than any snake with its teeth !

They don't really have teeth so much as little hooks smaller than cat claws (most species) that hold the prey while they swallow. Unless you are getting tagged by one of the few species that reaches over 10 feet it isn't a big deal.

Most lizards are not biters as long as you are not hurting or scaring them. some geckos are naturally mean and if you are scared probably should just avoid these (tokay for example)

There are certain species of turtles/tortoises that are known biters as well but are more easily avoided than a snake!

the most important thing to remember is that any snake is still a wild animal and can be unpredictable, respect that and you will have nothing to fear.

People tend to have a fear of anything out of the ordinary. Snakes remind people of creepy crawly things when actually, snakes are just as normal as a pet bird, with a few slight differences.

My snake resides in a 20g tank and other than my cats trying to get at him all the time, he's just fine. He's tried to bite me a few times, but I've been told by dozens of snake keepers, that a corn snakes bite hurts less than getting bitten by a cat or getting a shot at the doctor. Some people don't even feel a corn snake's bite.

I guess, if you want to get over your fear of snakes, go to a local reptile exhibition and just look around. Ask to hold a corn snake or ball python, as they are the calmest and are great beginner snakes. The only way to get over your fear of something is to realize that there is nothing to fear. Once you hold a snake and realize that its not 'out to get you' then the fear tends to dissapate.

I don't understand the fear. Go to a pet store and don't pay so much attention to their skin. Pay attention to their eyes and realize how scared they are of you. A huge monstrous thing and your hand is bigger than their entire head.

Maybe go to a pet store and explain it to one of the people there and ask to hold a snake or a calm lizard. Lizards tend to be really afraid of you and want to get out of your hand and run.

Also think of this: A feather is a modified scale. Feathers are a highly evolved form of a reptilian scale. Birds aren't too different from reptiles.

What are you scared of? The are great pets. Moabmusher, has it nailed, well said. I have 4 Iguanas and 1 Bearded Dragon(just adopted another coming in spring) in my room and a frog and 2 turtles down stairs, I love my animals so much. Sometimes my 1 Ig sleeps with me if I fall asleep and forget to put him back. It's pretty funny waking up in the morning with a giant lizard in your face that you forgot was there.

If you get a nice docile easy keeping species, snakes are great! I think it is helpful to see some really beautiful examples as there are many beautiful species and even more very colorful morphs out there.

i have two turtles and a leopard gecko (& a few other pets). the turtles dont do much. they sorta just sit on their rocks or swim, begging for food. they are nice and funny to watch tough.

the gecko is partially noctournal. she eats crickets--which we now breed-- and meal worms. she is very pretty and sooo cool to watch. it's almost like seeing a little dinosaur.

they make very good pets. i am not fond of snakes either, but i like frogs, lizards, turtles, etc. just give them a chance. :)

confident it somewhat is cruel. The mouse, rat, gerbil or regardless of rodent it somewhat is is terrified in the process the time this is interior the snake enclosure. and of direction the somewhat killing/ingesting is painful and vicious as nicely. tell your chum this, and regardless of if it somewhat is unlawful the place he's, report him. additionally, there have been many, many circumstances the place the rodents have harmed (or maybe killed each and every so often) the snake. interior the remarkable few seconds, the rodents final line of defence after working is to combat back. So for the mouse's sake, and the snakes sake, it somewhat is extra advantageous to apply frozen rodents.

I have iguanas and they are not in a cage. They usually hang out in their area, occasionally walking around.

They leave their area when they go to the bathroom, want something I'm eating or just feel like roaming (which is rare). In the summer, they'll wake me up when they want to go outside--yea, just like a dog.

I hang out with them outside in the summer, either on the patio or in the yard, kinda like babysitting. Their my babes and I love them!

My snakes don't bark, shed, wreck the furniture, poop on the carpet, borrow money or my car, eat my food steal my clothes etc. The only downside to them is they really suck at playing Frisbee.
