Well the first part -
Their nourishment consisted entirely of the vegetables of their garden, and the milk of one cow, who gave very little during the winter, when its masters could scarcely procure food to support it.
They ate, and enjoyed the fuits of thier own hands. They ate what they grew. Primairly vegtebles which means they are eatting healthy, enjoyed the many different things people can do with cow milk when they had it, when they could not feed the cow as much they received less sustinance for the cow.
How that realtes today - too many people live beyond their mean - they strive after the wind - trying to aquire riches like cars, clothes, etc. all based on sosciety setting the standards for what is a need verses a want- those who strive after the wind find it is more of a struggle to maintian and up keep a certain life style than it is to to live with the true necessities of life. Not the wants, but the needs.
The second part I wanted sure if that was your thought of the passage or part of the passage

It is showing how the world was in previous past times and what the world is eventually going to go back too. History repeats itself and this is a prime example of what future generations will succumb too. It shows how you will have to help others to in the long run come to help yourself. If you dont you will suffer yourself

It talks about selflessness. That's what we need in the world today. Self lessness and giving is what we often fail to do in our materialistic generation.
