I wish I knew.

But yes fear does protect you. Its the anxiety and the "fight or flight" responses in ordinary situations that are annoying. It all starts with the mind though. You have to develop self-confidence and high self esteem and stay in the present and get rid of irrational thinking by recognizing they are just thoughts and also exposing yourself to the feared situation over and over, then you can become fearless. Also try visualizing it over and over to overcome fears or better yet learn the skill of lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is awesome but takes a lot of practice before you gain such a powerful skill, if you learned it and learned it well and did crazy scary stuff in your dream all the time you'd probably, most likely become totally fearless. Research lucid dreaming, its really cool.

Get a lobotmy. Only really dim-witted people are truly fearless. Even the most daring thrill seekers feel fear...that's part of the RUSH of doing what they do.

By being a realist. For example for those people that will not swim in the ocean because they have a fear of sharks. The reality is that more people die from lightning strikes, or die from being hit on the head by a falling coconut.

There are very few things that scare me these days, because I have had a LOT happen to me in my life, I've lived through it all, it hasn't killed me, and though heaps of it was really difficult and i wouldn't want it to happen again, I know if it did, I'd survive it. Again! So my fear of it has lessened to resignation of the inevitability of something horrible happening to me!
