Nick is Daisy's distant cousin and comes from somewhere in the mid-west to escape a romantic attachment. He works in " stocks and bonds" and doesn't seem particularly ambitious. I think he is considered a "poor relation" of Daisy's and he certainly does not fit confortably into her social set. He is a rather casual and nonchalant character who seems willing to go with the flow and tries to be non-judgemental about the people he encounters in this world. He certainly doesn't take the moral high ground with regard to Tom's girl or Daisy's rendez-vous with Gatsby. In the end though, Nick does evolve and makes a choice about what he values in people. He rejects the shallow and duplcite world of Tom, Daisy and the sly Jordan and realises that Gatsby with all his faults, was still a person he could respect. I think at the end of the novel, there is hope for Nick.
